This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the prophet:

“Say to the daughter of Zion:[a]
    ‘Behold, your king is coming to you,
humble and riding on a donkey,
    and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ”

The disciples went off and did as Jesus had instructed them.
